Embedding YouTube Videos – PowerPoint 2010

  1. Enable the “Developer” tab on your ribbon. First, select file and then options
  2. Select customize ribbon – On the right hand column, make sure the Developer tab box has been checked.

  1. Browse to find the YouTube video that you would like to embed into your PowerPoint. Highlight the URL and copy. (You can copy by right-clicking the mouse and selecting copy OR you can use the keyboard shortcut CTRL C.)
  2. Next, you will select the developer tab found at the top of your ribbon. In the Controls box, select the icon that says “More Tools”.

  1. Scroll until you locate, “Shockwave Flash Object.” Select and click OK.

  1. You will draw out an area that will hold the video – Ideally; you will aim for either a rectangle or square shape that will be in proportion to the slide. For fun, I have a video screen photo on my slide that I will add the video to.
  2. Now you will need to attach the Video URL to the new object we have just created. Go to Properties under the Developer tab.

  1. Locate the Movie category and paste the URL link for your YouTube video.

  1. Before we are finished, we need to makes two tweaks to the URL before it will work properly. My original code is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBkZkf2Vmdw&feature=youtu.be – We need to change the highlighted area. http://www.youtube.com/v/cBkZkf2Vmdw&feature=youtu.bed  (Remove watch? and change the = to / )
    1. This is what will need to be used in the movie category on the properties tab. You can make these adjustments directly into the block or you may paste the link into a Word document to adjust and then copy and paste that link into the developer tab.
  2. Once updated, select the X in the top right corner of the properties box. *Note, you will see a white box with a black X until you run the PowerPoint at least one time.

  1. Your video has now been embedded directly into your PowerPoint presentation – which eliminates the need to open another browser.
